Cancer Australia invites nominations recognising community members, health professionals and researchers improving equitable cancer outcomes for Australians.

Cancer Australia has opened nominations for the 2026 Jeannie Ferris Awards, which recognises individuals whose work has made a meaningful difference in improving cancer outcomes.

The award reflects the priorities of the Australian Cancer Plan, particularly its focus on reducing inequities across all cancers, and acknowledges the vital contributions of consumers, clinicians and researchers working to improve outcomes for all Australians.

The awards have two categories, one for members of the community – including people with a lived experience of cancer, as well as family members, carers and community representatives – who have been involved in supporting people with cancer.

The second category recognises health professionals and researchers from all disciplines involved in cancer research or clinical care, including specialists, primary care practitioners, and nursing and allied health professionals.

Nominations are particularly encouraged for individuals whose work has led to improved outcomes for priority populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and others who experience disparities in cancer care and outcomes.

Cancer Australia CEO Professor Dorothy Keefe said the awards were a powerful celebration of those who were “reimagining cancer care through innovation and an unwavering belief that every person deserves the same chance to receive optimal patient care”.

“On World Cancer Day 2026, under the global theme ‘United by Unique’, we are reminded that while every cancer journey is deeply personal, we are united in our commitment to care that truly reflects people’s needs and experiences,” she said.

“This theme speaks to the heart of the Jeannie Ferris Awards – honouring those who champion people-centred, equitable cancer care, so that no one is left behind.

“Their efforts remind us that equity in cancer care isn’t just a goal – it’s a commitment to ensure every Australian, no matter their story or circumstance, can thrive.

“If you know someone whose contributions bring us closer to this goal, please nominate them.”

Established in 2013, the Jeannie Ferris Award honours the legacy of the late Jeannie Ferris, former Senator for South Australia, who was a passionate advocate for raising awareness of gynaecological cancers.

Senator Ferris was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October 2005 and died in April 2007.

While the award originally focused on improving outcomes for women with gynaecological cancers, its scope has since expanded to recognise contributions that improve equity in cancer outcomes for all people in Australia, in line with the Australian Cancer Plan.

Nominations for the 2026 Jeannie Ferris Award are open until 5pm (AEST) on Friday, 10 April 2026.

Health professionals are encouraged to consider nominating colleagues, researchers, community members or themselves, and to share this opportunity through their professional networks.

Nomination forms and detailed submission guidelines are available here, along with further information about the Award criteria.

This year’s recipients will be announced at a presentation at Parliament House later this year.
